It is always an incredible feeling to set of into the mountains from Lukla, leaving behind all of the hustle and bustle of Kathmandu and Lukla airport and soak up the stunning scenery.
Our first day hiking follows the Dudh Koshi river for around 14 km to the small settlement of Monjo (2835 m). Much of the day is downhill, loosing around 300 m in elevation by lunchtime. Most trekking groups stop for the night at Phakding (2610 m) but we carry on a little further to Monjo which is not only quieter but at a similar elevation to Lukla (2840 m). The Monjo Guesthouse is one of my favourite lodges, it has a pretty garden to watch the sunset from, and the most delicious apple pie and apple jam made from homegrown apples.
